Nacag Project

Green nitric acid production, a bet by Monómeros for a more sustainable business

The company Monómeros and GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation), operator of the NACAG (Nitric Acid Climate Action Group) initiative in Colombia, signed an agreement to implement technologies that will reduce Nitrous Oxide emissions by 85% at the plant of Nitric Acid from the company.

  • The project is scheduled to be completed in 2025, with an investment of over 9 billion Colombian pesos.
  • NACAG is a German government initiative that seeks to reduce global emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) in the nitric acid industry, a raw material for the manufacture of fertilizers.

Monómeros has decided to play a leading role in the fight against climate change by joining the NACAG initiative. Through this project commissioned by the government of the Federal Republic of Germany, promoted by Colombia and operated by GIZ, the company will install a new emissions reduction system.

The project involves the installation of a catalyst that will allow the chemical decomposition of nitrous oxide into nitrogen and elemental oxygen, which have no effect on the environment. The project also includes the installation of a flow meter and a nitrous oxide analyzer in the stack gases, in order to record the reductions in a standardized and verifiable way.

This initiative positions the company at the forefront of decarbonisation in the sector, through international funds and the implementation of a greenhouse gas abatement system, thus contributing to Colombia's compliance goals in view of the Paris Agreements.
